Haiti - Market Analysis, April 2016

This report investigates market functioning in Haiti drought-prone areas. It informs WFP’s program design in view of its commitment to scale-up food assistance in 2016 and reach one million vulnerable food insecure households severely affected by the drought. The report analyses the double impact of the El Niño’s dry spells on food availability and food access. It explores the interlinkages between drought, currency depreciation and political uncertainty. The study assesses market capacity to meet increased demand generated by a Cash Based Transfer (CBT) intervention and discusses complementary response strategies to sustain the reprise of agricultural production and to facilitate the rehabilitation of labour markets. The analysis is based on secondary and primary data. The latter were collected in December 2015 through a joint survey conducted by WFP and the Haitian National Coordination for Food Security (CNSA).
