Typhoon Hagupit (known locally as Ruby) made its first landfall in the Philippines' Eastern Samar province as Category 2 on 6 December 2014 with maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h and gusts of up to 210 km/h. While crossing the Philippines, the typhoon lost strength and left the Philippine area of responsibility on 9 December 2014 as a tropical storm. The typhoon made landfall three times, with Masbate and Batangas province following Eastern Samar. Storm surges of about 4 to 5 metres along the coastal areas occurred accompanied with heavy rains and strong winds.
