Honduras is one of the poorest countries in Latin America, with a third of the population living on less than a dollar a day. Recurrent natural disasters and a susceptibility to the effects of climate change contribute to food insecurity. Weather extremes such as prolonged drought and hurricanes severely affect the ability of subsistence farmers to produce enough food to feed their families.
These issues have a major impact on the food security of the country’s most vulnerable people, in particular those living in the southern and western regions. These areas suffer environmental degradation, yet are home to a high concentration of smallholder farmers. The World Food Programme (WFP) has been working to support these communities since 1970, with a presence in all 18 departments of Honduras.
Working in conjunction with the Honduran Government, our programmes aim to improve the food security of the most disadvantaged people in Honduras. This includes improving nutrition among babies and children, supporting pregnant and breastfeeding women and those living with HIV, and building communities’ resilience to the effects of climate change.
What the World Food Programme is doing in Honduras
School mealsFunded 90 percent by the Honduran Government and managed by WFP, this programme provides nutritious meals to 1.4 million children in over 21,000 schools nationwide - 95 percent of the country’s total school population. The programme supports access to education and reduces gender inequality, giving families an incentive to send their children to school. It also strengthens local economies, as food is bought from small, local producers where possible.
Agroforestry and adaptation to climate changeThis programme concentrates on helping vulnerable Hondurans build resilience to the effects of climate change, which are felt particularly strongly in the so-called ‘Dry Corridor’. It is targeting 97,490 people for five years, and primarily involves giving out cash, food or vouchers in exchange for activities such as the planting of fruit trees and other useful trees. It also provides training in sustainable practices.
Disaster preparedness and emergency responseWFP supports the people of Honduras by providing urgent basic food supplies during emergencies, helping to ensure a quick recovery that reduces the longer-term impact of disasters on vulnerable communities. WFP also works to mitigate the effects of natural disasters and drought through environmental activities such as agroforestry, soil and water conservation, and the diversification of agricultural production.
Cash and voucher transfersWFP uses cash transfers and vouchers to help Hondurans affected by emergencies such as the major drought the country is experiencing. This ensures that families can purchase food in certain local shops, strengthening the local economy. It also enables them to choose their own food, keeping their diet varied and maintaining a sense of normal life. Working with the Government of Honduras, WFP has helped 43,000 families in this way.
Nutritional care for vulnerable groupsThis programme ensures appropriate nutrition for children under five in Honduras, as well as for pregnant and breastfeeding women. It provides comprehensive care and special fortified food for children in the first 1,000 days of life, aiming to prevent stunting and malnourishment. The programme also supports those living with HIV and their families, aiming to boost survival rates and ensure compliance with medical treatment.
